The Painful Truth About The Worldwide Church of God
Acts of God,
Other Tragedies, And
Unanswered Prayers
(A work in progress)
By Ed Sr.

As far as I know, all Christian churches teach that God answers prayers. Many readers of The Painful Truth also cling to this belief even though their brains tell them that they have no way to prove it. If you believe in a god that answers prayers, ponder the following:

The Illogicalness of "Answered Prayer"
Unanswered Prayers, Who's Fault?

The Illogicalness of "Answered Prayer"

What would you think of a person that would help you get a job, but would not help another person escape a mudslide, even if they had the power to do it? What about a person that would help you find a parking place but would not lift a finger while thousands of women are raped?

If you think that this behavior is unacceptable for a "person," what about for a "god?"

What kind of god would help some people but let other people suffer horrendous tortures, misery and death? Would you want such a god helping you? Would you think it was just because of your "goodness" or closeness to this god that won his favor for you? Would you think that you are special to this god and take what you can get and forget all the people that this god refuses to help? Would you just hope that these people would find your true religion and then they could have their prayers answered too?

If you don't get any "answers to prayer," religious types put all of the blame on you. (See the list below) You are doing something wrong if you don't have prayers answered. It is all your fault. You have some sin separating you from God. You are not praying enough. You don't recognize that the answer is "no." All your fault. All the fault of the many millions of people that did not get their prayers answered and are very dead. Just imagine this god sitting around twiddling his thumbs while people are suffering and dying, and he is just wishing people could get this prayer thing right so he would be able to help them. Or maybe he really doesn't care if you get it right but, if you do, then he will help you, even in the smallest things.

Does God get a cab for you? Help you find a parking place? Help you pass a test? Get a raise? Find a job? Win a football game? Have you, in your closeness to god, had your prayers answered? If you are so successful in your prayers, you really should be using your prayers more effectively because there are an awful lot of people that need your god to intervene in their lives. If you are doing that already, how effective are you? What is your ratio of petitions asked and petitions received?  Are you sure it is not just time and chance? Maybe you should be praying that God would try to be more humane and have less godly superiority. Why can humans be nicer persons than the god most people worship?

When you watch disasters on your TV set, from the comfort of your "God blessed home," such as the recent mudslides in El Salvador, or the Earthquakes in India, with the people crying for their dead and missing children and relatives, here is how you can help comfort people in the midst of tragedy and destruction. Instead of praying for these people, which doesn't help at all, talk to them. Talk to them through your TV set. You have as good a chance of them hearing you as they have of getting a prayer through to this god that refuses to help them:

Say to them, through your magic TV screen:
"God loves you. You just have to get yourself right with him. Maybe you have the wrong religion, keep looking, you may just find it out of the thousands of versions you can choose from. Don't you realize that God provides for littlest of  birds and he will provide for you too? Of course, you have to realize that god also provides little birds for little cats so that cats can play with them and torture them, as cats love to do, before they are eaten by the cats. Maybe this is just your turn to be the "bird" to someone else's "cat." But always remember that god loves you; he just has a hard time showing it. So get the most out of  your "act of god." He is only doing it for your good; you must have some lesson to learn while you die a miserable death. Now, don't you feel better?"

If you look at God as a "father figure" you should be looking at him as a father figure in jail because no human father would ever get away with treating his children with such indifference, if not abuse.

Unanswered Prayers:
The Most Common Reasons Why
(From the Internet)

Lack of Fellowship with God and His word
Not seeking to Please the Lord
Un-confessed Sin in One’s Life
Improper Motives
Not asking in God’s will
Don’t know how to pray
Lack of Faith
Misunderstanding of Faith
Wavering faith
Failure to apply spiritual Authority
Lack of Perseverance

I think you can see that, according to religionists and apologists for a god that hides himself from mankind, if you don't get an answer to your prayer, it is all your fault. So, while you are lying 20 feet under a pile of rubble or mud, how about using this time, while you wait for human intervention, because you know, as sure as shit, you are not going to get any help from God, to meditate on what the hell is wrong with YOU that is keeping your god from helping you.

Problems with supposedly "answered prayers."

1. Before you can "know" that God answered your prayers, you have to know that there is a God. This has never been proven, only "believed." You could just as well believe that the Easter Bunny answered your prayers; you have as much proof for one as the other.

2. Even if you have what you think is an "answered prayer," you don't know that it was the Christian god that answered it. there may be some other god that answers prayers no matter who you pray to. This is what Hinduism believes of their god, Krishna.

3. Just because a supposedly "supernatural healing" has happened to you, does not mean that it is supernatural.

a. A "healing" of a medical condition presumes that doctors can never give a wrong diagnosis. The fact is that doctors make many mistakes, look at all the lawsuits against doctors.

b. The natural recuperative abilities of the body cannot be discounted.

c. Even if you recover from a terrible illness, it does not mean that "god" did it. All that can really be said is that recovery was accomplished through an unknown process.

4. If you are indeed cured of some illness, how about giving the doctors that did it the credit? If you are healed without any medical intervention, then you can give your god credit. Otherwise, give credit where credit is due. The doctors and scientists do all the work and it seems god gets the credit, no matter what. Of course, if  you die and then it is just God's will. God has a really good racket going here. He can't lose. Everything is His will, according to his mindless followers.

A Bunch of Obviously Unanswered Prayers

Below are a listing of millions of incidences where "God" could have answered prayers, but didn't. I don't think that I am mistaken in thinking that some, if not most of the people, before they died, were asking for protection or safety or delivery. If you can rationalize a good and just god that could turn a deaf ear to these people who were surely crying out to whoever they think "He" is, as they died, you are a good Christian.

The only sane conclusion you can come to when reading this list of death and destruction is that we are carnal. We are meat. Our lives and deaths are not important to any god being.

When you start to think that you are important because you have had a "prayer answered," you belittle the deaths of all these millions of innocents who died through no fault of their own; only a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time or having been born in the wrong country.

No damn wonder that people are scared shitless into following any religious sounding asshole who says he can give some protection from all the death, misery and destruction in this world, if only in "heaven."

Noah's flood (For those of you that believe in it.)

Genocide committed by the "Loving" God of the Bible. Multiple millions of men, women and children killed because they were behaving just as they were created. Shame on them. (Or, shame on God? What kind of monster do you worship?)

Black Death (bubonic plague)

There were three major epidemics - in the 6th, 14th, and 17th centuries.

The death toll was 137 million victims.

1099

The Netherlands and England
A combination of high tides and storm waves on the North Sea flooded coastal areas of England and the Netherlands, killing 100,000 people.

1201

Near East and Mediterranean Sea.

The worst recorded earthquake in history took an estimated 1 million lives.

1492----

The historian Russell Thornton has estimated the total number of people in all of the Americas (North, Central, and South, as well as Greenland) in 1492 at 72,000,000 and about 5,000,000 in what became the 48 states of the USA.  They were not Indians, since they did not live in India.  They were not Americans, since "America" had not yet been discovered or named America.  They were human beings who spoke hundreds of different languages, belonged to hundreds of different tribal communities, and called themselves Oneida, Kiowa, Cherokee, Apache, Aztec, Ojibwa, Lakota, Arawak, Nipmuc, Inuit, Mohawk, etc.  They were systematically slaughtered by the invading settlers from Europe, until by 1900 only 250,000 were alive in the USA.  This was 5% of the original number 400 years earlier.  Once again the Christian God had been hard at work answering the fervent, effectual prayers of white European settlers who were afraid of their barbarian neighbors.

1556
More than 830,000 people in the Shensi Province, China, were killed by this earthquake. It caused the collapse of caves that people had carved out of cliffs and used for homes.

1780

Caribbean Islands
The worst hurricane on record killed more than 20,000 people and destroyed the naval fleets of the British, Spanish, and French. The hurricane destroyed everything in its path from the island of Barbados to Puerto Rico.

1788

In 1788 Britain began using Australia as a dumping grounds to which criminals could be sent to get them out of Britain.  At that time there were about 300,000 human beings already in Australia who called themselves Koori and living in 600 small communities.  Since they had a much darker skin color than the white British criminals, they were deemed sub-human and a racist slaughter soon ensued.  Koori were deliberately poisoned, systematically slaughtered, butchered, murdered, trapped, ambushed, massacred, ravaged by the infectious diseases of the whites, stalked and hunted down for their body parts, kidnapped, sexually enslaved, chained, and hunted for sport.  By 1930 there were 3,000 left, only one percent of the original population.

1804

In 1777 British explorers landed on the island of Tasmania just south of Australia.  By 1802 they were using Tasmania as a criminal dumping ground just as they had been using Australia since 1788.  A deliberate campaign of genocide against the native Tasmanians was started in 1804 by the enlightened Christian settlers from Europe.  The native population of 8,000 in 1802 was "successfully" reduced to only 75 by 1830.  The last living full-blooded native Tasmanian, a 73-year-old woman, died in 1876.  Whites had killed Tasmanians to feed their dogs, roasted Tasmanian infants alive, and committed many other horrible atrocities.  The ethnic cleansing in Tasmania is considered by many historians to be the fastest and most complete holocaust ever.

December 16, 1838
South African farmers of Dutch descent, the Voortrekkers, decided they needed a decisive battle over their neighbor Zulus with whom they had failed to negotiate land issues.  On December 16, 1838, the desired battle took place at Blood River.  There were 464 Boers (Dutch word for farmers), 3 English settlers, and 120 Bantus (other South African native blacks) from Port Natal against an army of 10,000 Zulus.  The very religious Boers held a prayer service and pledged to God that they would consecrate the day and keep it holy if God gave them victory.  When the battle was over, 3,000 Zulus were dead and 3 Boers were wounded.  The Christian God was hard at work that day delivering his chosen people yet again from the hordes of evil pagans in possibly the most one-sided victory in all military history.  Of course, the fact that the Boers had rifles and cannons while the Zulus had only spears made it a lot easier for God to perform his miracle.  The Boers kept their promise to God, and December 16 became a national day of remembrance when the Afrikaner party took political control of the country in 1948.

April 27, 1865
The steamer Sultana exploded on the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee, killing more than 1,400 prisoners of war from the Union Army who were on board the ship.

And I thought God had been invoked to protect the Union Army and to preserve the union of the United States of America. And we all know that rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and God hates sin, but the explosion and death of 1,400 Union soldiers was a help to the side of the evil rebels in the Confederate States of America. God must have forgotten that the rebels were evil when he very proactively intervened to "allow" that explosion.

1845-1850

In the late summer of 1845 one of the greatest human ecological disasters in the history of the world began in Ireland. A fungus from North America established itself in Ireland and commenced to destroy the potato crop. When the fungus had run its course at least 1 million, possibly as many as 2 million, Irish had died and another 1 1/2 million had emigrated. No one can fully capture in words the magnitude or the intensity of the suffering and hardship endured by the Irish people from 1845-1850.

August 27, 1883
Krakatoa, a large volcanic island lying in the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java, was discovered in the sixteenth century. Its first recorded eruption was in 1680. Two hundred years later, when the island was covered with tropical vines, shrubs and trees and its volcano was thought to be extinct, the volcano erupted with such force on August 27, 1883, that its sides caved in, causing a 120-foot tidal wave that swept the Java coastal towns. The power of the explosion was thought to be 26 times the power of the greatest H bomb, and the roar was heard over one-thirteenth of the surface of the earth. The eruption wiped out 163 villages, killing 36,380 people.

1888
March 11–14, East Coast: the “Blizzard of 1888.” 400 people died; as much as five feet of snow. Damage was estimated at $20 million.

1889
United States.
The Johnstown Flood, in Pennsylvania, was considered one of the worst disasters in U.S. history. After an unusually heavy rainstorm, a dam 74 miles upriver from Johnstown broke. One out of every 10 people in the path of the flood died, a total of 2,000 people in less than an hour.

September 8, 1900

When one of the most severe hurricanes ever to strike the United States came aground at Galveston. Residents of Galveston had no way to escape the winds and rising waters; 8,000 people died in the storm.

1903  December 30th,
The Iroquois Theater Fire
"In darkness, the living clawed over bodies piled 10 high around doors and windows, especially in the stairwell area exits from the balcony to the main floor. Other fatalities occurred as fire broke out underneath an alley fire escape, causing people above the fire to jump. The first to jump died as they hit the hard pavement. Later jumpers landed on the bodies and survived. Patrons also jumped from the balcony to the main floor of the theater with the same effect. Within fifteen minutes, it was all over. By the time firefighters arrived, the auditorium was silent. Firemen snuffed out the blaze within half an hour, but hope did not survive.
Five hundred and seventy five were dead; at least 27 more would die from their injuries. Families were devastated and torn apart, women and children suffering the most. Among the 500 performers and backstage personnel, only the tightrope artist caught high above the stage died."

December 28, 1908

"Italy's worst earthquake occurred on December 28, 1908, striking both sides of the Straits of Messina and killing more than 200,000. The hardest hit area was the city of Messina, on the northeastern coast of Sicily, where some 84,000 were killed and 90 percent of the city was reduced to rubble. Thousands of others died in and around Calabria, on the mainland. Financial damage was estimated at $1 billion. French, Greek, Argentine, and US governments donated generously to a relief fund."

The Internet story referenced below says it was "deadliest in European history," and also that 100,000 total died, estimates vary. Much more info at http://www.arduini.net/tales/tales15a.htm

"The immense search-rescue-burial-resettlement-cleanup work went on for months, and left the young troops forever haunted by memories of:

 -  infants crushed in the wreckage
-  orphans screaming vainly for their trapped parents
-  desperate pleas for help that fell silent before the wounded could be rescued
-  dazed, starving, and freezing survivors wandering in shredded nightclothes and moaning to absent saints in the dark
-  families hopelessly separated in the overwhelming confusion
-  corpse scavengers, wild packs of dogs, and looters to be shot on sight
-  water poisoned by decaying animals
-  hundreds of bodies at a time burning in mass graves"

June 15, 1904

Another horrible catastrophe showing hundreds of unanswered prayers was the fire on board the General Slocum Steamboat on June 15, 1904 in the East River of New York. The St. Mark's German Lutheran Church had hired the boat for their 17th annual picnic, a Sunday School outing, to be held on Long Island. 1,358 passengers, mostly women and children, got on the boat. Shortly after leaving the East 3rd Street pier in New York City, the boat caught fire. 1,021 people died in this horrible disaster. Life preservers and fire hoses were defective. Every crew member, including the captain, jumped overboard to safety. It was the worst disaster ever in American coastal waters. Many survivors committed suicide afterwards because they had lost their children or spouses.

1915

On April 24th 1915, commemorated worldwide by Armenians as Genocide Memorial Day, hundreds of Armenian leaders were murdered in Istanbul after being summoned and gathered. The now leaderless Armenian people were to follow. Across the Ottoman Empire (with the exception of Constantinople and Adana, presumably due to a large foreign presence) the same events transpired from village to village, from province to province.

The remarkable thing about the following events is the virtually complete cooperation of the Armenians. For a number of reasons they did not know what was planned for them and went along with "their" governments plan to "relocate them for their own good". First the Armenians were asked to turn in hunting weapons for the war effort. Communities were often given quotas and would have to buy additional weapons from Turks to meet their quota. Later, the government would claim these weapons were proof that Armenians were about to rebel. The able bodied men were then "drafted" to help in the wartime effort. These men were either immediately killed or were worked to death. Now the villages and towns, with only women, children and elderly left were systematically emptied. The remaining residents would be told to gather for a temporary relocation. To only bring what they could carry. The Armenians, again obediently followed instructions and were "escorted" by Turkish Gendarmes in death marches.

The death marches would lead across Anatolia and the purpose was clear. The Armenians were being raped, starved, dehydrated, murdered and kidnapped along the way. The Turkish Gendarmes either led these atrocities or turned a blind eye. Their eventual destination for resettlement was just as telling in revealing the Turkish governments goal. The Syrian Desert. Der Zor. Those who miraculously survived the march would arrive to this bleak desert only to be killed upon arrival or to somehow survive until a way to escape the empire was found. Usually those that survived and escaped received assistance from what have come to be known as "good Turks", from foreign missionaries who recorded much of these events and from Arabs,

One and a half million Armenians were killed, out of a total of two and a half million Armenians in the Ottoman Empire.

"I am confident that the whole history of the human race contains no such horrible episode as this. The great massacres and persecutions of the past seem almost insignificant when compared to the sufferings of the Armenian race in 1915."

--Henry Morgenthau, Sr. US Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire

December 6, 1917
The Mont Blanc was sailing through Halifax Harbor carrying a huge supply of explosives and other war supplies to be taken to Europe for use in World War I. In a horrible accident, the ship was struck by another larger vessel, the Imo, and within a few minutes exploded, devastating the towns on both sides of the harbor and killing thousands. It was the largest man-made explosion in the world prior to the start of the nuclear age.

1918-1919
Influenza right after World War I (the war killed 9 million men in 4 years)
This was no minor disease - everyone on the planet was at risk.
In one year, nearly twenty million cases were reported in the United States, accounting for almost 850,000 deaths.
The pandemic (an epidemic that is spread worldwide) that killed at least 25 million people in one year. Some estimates put the number as high as 37 million.

1932-33

Stalin engineered a famine (by massively raising the grain quota that the peasantry had to turn over to the state); this killed between six and seven million people and broke the back of Ukrainian resistance. The Ukrainian famine has only recently been recognized as one of the most destructive genocides of the twentieth century (see Robert Conquest, The Harvest of Sorrow, and the Web resources compiled by The Ukrainian Weekly).

The Five-Year Plans for industry, too, were implemented in an extraordinarily brutal fashion, leading to the deaths of millions of convict labourers, overwhelmingly men. These atrocities will be described in detail in the forthcoming corvée (forced] labour case study. The millions of deaths in Stalin's "Gulag Archipelago" (the network of labour camps [gulags] scattered across the length and breath of Russia) are dealt with in the incarceration/death penalty case study.

Stalin's drive for total control, and his pressing need for convict labour to fuel rapid industrialization, next spawned the series of immense internal purges -- beginning in 1935 -- that sent millions of party members and ordinary individuals to their deaths, either through summary executions or in the atrocious conditions of the "Gulag Archipelago."

1932-1939

Unit 731
In a top secret research facility called Unit 731, Japanese doctor Shiro Ishii and his staff conducted diabolical weapons research that claimed the lives of untold thousands--perhaps even hundreds of thousands--of Chinese civilians. Unlike his equals in the Nazi death camps, his deeds were not exposed and no one was ever punished for the atrocities committed at unit 731 and other similar camps, because the documents recording their grim findings were secretly sold to the United States in exchange for amnesty. UNIT 731: NIGHTMARE IN MANCHURIA details these crimes against humanity, revealing never-before-told tales and secret documents that condemn two governments for their complicity in keeping this story silent for so long.
One of the most shocking and troubling tales of WWII is finally told, and the repercussions may be felt for a long time.

Top secret from its inception, Unit 731 was piously labeled the Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department. It would eventually relocate to Pingfan, 20 km south of Harbin, where Dr. Shiro, now a full colonel, commanded 3,000 Japanese subordinates. The most sinister aspect of Unit 731, the involuntary germ warfare experimentation on live humans, now began in earnest.

Prisoners became nothing more than cheap research animals. Injected or sprayed with deadly biologicals such as plague, anthrax, cholera or typhoid, they would be tied down to tables and dissected without benefit of anesthesia.

"Vivisection should be done under normal circumstances. If we'd used anesthesia, that might have affected the body organs and blood vessels that we were examining. So we couldn't have used anesthetic," said a surviving Unit 731 medical assistant.

The "luckier" prisoners were anesthetized and then used as practice surgical subjects. Organs would be removed and limbs amputated. When the surgeons were done, the subject would be killed by lethal injection.

"Two Chinese men were brought in, stripped naked and given general anesthetic. The others began practicing various kinds of surgery: first an appendectomy, then an amputation of an arm, and finally a tracheotomy," the medical assistant reported.

Some prisoners were used for "field tests" - taken to deserted areas and tied to stakes while planes sprayed the zone with plague culture or infected fleas. Others had limbs frozen to mimic frostbite, while some had deliberately inflicted shrapnel wounds infected with Clostridia to produce gas gangrene.

"The subjects were bound to stakes some 10 to 20 meters away from a shrapnel bomb that was loaded with gas gangrene. The object was not to kill the men by exploding the bomb, but to test the effectiveness of gas gangrene as a biological weapon ä All the subjects were wounded in the legs or buttocks, and seven days later they died in great torment," said the assistant.

Children did not escape the abhorrent experiments, but as always, there was contrived justification. "Of course there were experiments on children. But, probably their fathers were spies."

Sadly, no moral or ethical considerations ever entered into the equation. The prisoners were dehumanized and referred to as marutas, or "logs," a means to an end to satisfy the scientist's quest. They were identified by a three- or four-digit number.

Ironically, the "logs" were treated with good food and exercise - a "fattening up" period for the inhuman experimentation. The research facilities themselves came to be known as "lumber mills" and were surrounded by moats, tall brick walls, electric fences, watchtowers and patrolling aircraft.

A rationale for the use of prisoners was based on an old code of "honor in death." The Japanese had little tolerance for surrender and believed it was nobler to commit suicide than be captured. "They thought the prisoners would die an honorable death, if in the process they contributed to the progress of medical science," noted one report.

December 13th 1937
Nanjing Massacre - Inhuman Warfare
300,000 Chinese soldiers and civilians were killed, and 20,000 women were raped
On December 13th 1937, Nanjing, the Capital of China during the war, finally fell to the Japanese. Feeling humiliated for not capturing China within the 3 months, Japanese military force immediately systematically started murdering civilian in the Chinese capital under the "Kill all, Loot all, Burn all" military policy. It was a well planned, full scale revenge designed to intimidate and crush the spirit of China. Japanese soldier began an orgy of cruelty seldom, if ever, matched in Human History.

In the next 6 to 8 weeks, Japanese soldiers under the direct command of Prince Asaka Yasuhiko, the uncle of Japanese Emperor Hirohito, looted all the precious Chinese national treasures, ancient artifacts and books, and committed the infamous "Nanjing Datusha" or Nanjing Massacre", or "Rape of Nanjing".

The brutalities included shooting, stabbing, cutting open the abdomen, excavating the heart, decapitation, drowning, punching the body and eye with an awl. Thousands of civilians were buried or burn alive, or used as targets for bayonet practice, shot in large groups and thrown into Yangtze River.

Many soldiers went beyond rape to disembowel women, slice off their breasts, nail them to walls. Fathers were forced to rape their daughters, and sons their mothers, as other family members watched.

Not only did live burials, castration, the carving of organs and the roasting of people become routine, but more diabolical tortures were practiced, such as hanging people by their tongues on iron hooks or burying people to their waists and watching them torn apart by dogs.

Japanese invented games of rape and torture, turned murder into sport. Soldiers competed in "Bushido" - KILLING CONTEST and sent the number of murders back to Nichi-Nichi Shimbun national newspaper in Japan to publish.

"I have never been to hell, but there is a hell, it was in this city," reporter for the Tokyo Times told the killing in Nanjing.

"At one time, after Nanking was captured, more than 30,000 Chinese were driven to the foot of the city wall. Machine guns then swept the crowd and grenades were thrown from atop the wall. The 30,000 people were all killed, most of them were women, children, and elderly." reported Tokyo Asahi Shimbun correspondent Yoshio Moriyama on December 14, 1937.

"Those in the second row were forced to dump the severed bodies into the river before they themselves were beheaded," The Japanese military correspondent, Yukio Omata, wrote, "The killing went on non-stop from morning until night ........".

1933
A deadly tsunami killed 3,000 people on the island of Honshu, Japan. The tidal wave, caused by an earthquake, sank 8,000 ships and destroyed 9,000 homes.

1937-1938

Stalin's Purges
By 1938, Conquest estimates that about 7 million Purge victims were in the labour/death camps, on top of the hundreds of thousands who had been slaughtered outright. In the worst camps, such as those of the Kolyma gold-mining region in the Arctic, the survival rate was just 2 or 3 percent (see the incarceration/death penalty case study). Alexander Solzhenitsyn calls the prison colonies in the Solovetsky Islands "the Arctic Auschwitz," and cites the edict of their commander, Naftaly Frenkel, which "became the supreme law of the Archipelago: 'We have to squeeze everything out of a prisoner in the first three months -- after that we don't need him anymore.'" (Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago, vol. 2, p. 49.)
Arrests, 1937-1938 - about 7 million
Executed - about 1 million
Died in camps - about 2 million
In prison, late 1938 - about 1 million
In camps, late 1938 - about 8 million
1939 August

Hitler and Stalin signed a secret non-aggression pact with each other in August, 1939. One of the protocols of this pact divided Poland up into two sections; the USSR could have one and Germany would have the other. After Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 the USSR was then free to invade its portion of Poland from the east. Once they had invaded, the Soviet Army began atrocities. The Soviet secret police, called the NKVD at that time, ordered the liquidation of three Polish prisoners-of-war camps on February 12, 1940, and the operation was completed on June 6, 1940. At Katyn Forest, the NKVD shot and buried 4,254 Polish Army officers that had been taken prisoner when the Soviet Union invaded Poland in September 1939 in support of the Nazis. 10,217 others were murdered at the two other camps.

In June 1941 Hitler began his Operation Barbarossa, which was a massive attack on the Soviet Union. Germany then began to take the USSR's portion Poland. In 1943, while sweeping eastwards through Poland on their way to Moscow, German soldiers discovered the mass grave at Katyn and blamed the massacre there on the Soviets, who in turn blamed it on the Germans. After all, in a war one can get away with almost anything during the confusion. Another estimate puts the number of Polish officers murdered at Katyn by the Soviets at 15,000.

The Katyn Forest, once in Polish territory, is near the city of Smolensk, now part of Russian territory.

Eyewitness Account of Einsatz Executions

On October 5, 1942, by accident, Hermann Graebe, a German engineer and manager of a German construction firm in the Ukraine, and his foreman, came upon an Einsatz execution squad killing Jews from the small town of Dubno in the Ukraine. He gave the following eyewitness account:

"My foreman and I went directly to the pits. Nobody bothered us. Now I heard rifle shots in quick succession from behind one of the earth mounds. The people who had got off the trucks - men, women and children of all ages - had to undress upon the order of an SS man who carried a riding or dog whip. They had to put down their clothes in fixed places, sorted according to shoes, top clothing and undergarments. I saw heaps of shoes of about 800 to 1000 pairs, great piles of under-linen and clothing.

Without screaming or weeping these people undressed, stood around in family groups, kissed each other, said farewells, and waited for a sign from another SS man, who stood near the pit, also with a whip in his hand. During the fifteen minutes I stood near, I heard no complaint or plea for mercy.

I watched a family of about eight persons, a man and a woman both of about fifty, with their children of about twenty to twenty-four, and two grown-up daughters about twenty-eight or twenty-nine. An old woman with snow white hair was holding a one year old child in her arms and singing to it and tickling it. The child was cooing with delight. The parents were looking on with tears in their eyes. The father was holding the hand of a boy about ten years old and speaking to him softly; the boy was fighting his tears. The father pointed to the sky, stroked his head and seemed to explain something to him.

At that moment the SS man at the pit started shouting something to his comrade. The latter counted off about twenty persons and instructed them to go behind the earth mound. Among them was the family I have just mentioned. I well remember a girl, slim with black hair, who, as she passed me, pointed to herself and said, "twenty-three years old."

I walked around the mound and found myself confronted by a tremendous grave. People were closely wedged together and lying on top of each other so that only their heads were visible. Nearly all had blood running over their shoulders from their heads. Some of the people shot were still moving. Some were lifting their arms and turning their heads to show that they were still alive. The pit was nearly two-thirds full. I estimated that it already contained about a thousand people.

I looked for the man who did the shooting. He was an SS man, who sat at the edge of the narrow end of the pit, his feet dangling into the pit. He had a tommy-gun on his knees and was smoking a cigarette.

The people, completely naked, went down some steps which were cut in the clay wall of the pit and clambered over the heads of the people lying there to the place to which the SS man directed them. They lay down in front of the dead or wounded people; some caressed those who were still alive and spoke to them in a low voice. Then I heard a series of shots. I looked into the pit and saw that the bodies were twitching or the heads lying already motionless on top of the bodies that lay beneath them. Blood was running from their necks.

The next batch was approaching already. They went down into the pit, lined themselves up against the previous victims and were shot."

August 6 and 9, 1945
The cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed by the first atomic bombs used in warfare.  The radiation generated by the bomb caused long-term problems to those affected. Many people died within the first few months and many more in subsequent years because of radiation exposure. Some people had genetic problems which sometimes resulted in having malformed babies or being unable to have children.

It is believed that more than 140,000 people died by the end of the year. They were citizens including students, soldiers and Koreans who worked in factories within the city. The total number of people who have died due to the bomb is estimated to be 200,000.

WORLD WAR II
http://gi.grolier.com/wwii/wwii_16.html#DATA

Civilian Casualties:

Civilian casualties in Great Britain 60,595 killed.

Civilian casualties in the USSR have been placed roughly at 2,500,000 killed. The loss of population (including both military and civilian casualties) caused directly or indirectly by the war has been stated at 20,000,000. Air raids against Germany killed approximately 300,000 Germans and seriously injured about 780,000 more. Numerous additional casualties occurred during the Soviet invasion of 1944-1945, but no specific estimates are available. Japanese civilian casualties probably approached 500,000 killed and 625,000 seriously injured, plus a considerable number reported as missing after the fire raids and atomic bombings. In addition, about 360,000 Japanese captured by the Russians in Manchuria, Korea, and the Kuril Islands were still missing in 1950; a large number of them have never been accounted for. Chinese civilian losses are unknown but probably numbered several million.

    Vietnam War
More than 47,000 Americans were killed in action, nearly 11,000 died of other causes, and more than 303,000 were wounded in the war. Casualty figures for the Vietnamese are far less certain. Estimates of the ARVN's casualties range from 185,000 to 225,000 killed and 500,000 to 570,000 wounded. The North Vietnamese and Viet Cong suffered about 900,000 troops killed and an unknown, but huge, number of wounded. In addition, more than 1,000,000 North and South Vietnamese civilians were killed during the war.

Earthquake, Shensi Province, China, 830,000 died

    1959-61
    Northern China
The world's deadliest famine killed an estimated 30 million people in China. Drought was followed by crop failure, which was followed by starvation, disease, and cannibalism. News of the famine was not revealed to the rest of the world until 1981, some 20 years later.

    1960 to 1996

During Guatemala's civil war, from 1960 to 1996, an estimated 200,000 people were killed or disappeared, the overwhelming majority killed by Guatemala's right-wing military governments. The military governments specifically targeted the indigenous Maya people, taking the lives of 85,000 to 110,000 indigenous people (according to Guatemalan generals' estimates) in the rural highlands from 1981 to 1983. In 1999 the United Nations-sponsored Commission 1994 in Rwanda, a country in east central Africa, between 500,000 and 1 million people, mostly of the Tutsi ethnic group, were slain after a coup by extremists of the Hutu ethnic group.

    1962
    Peru
When tons of ice and snow slid down Huascaran Peak in the Andes Mountains, nearly 4,000 people were killed. Some 30 years later, it is still considered the world's worst avalanche.

    1967-69
    Biafra (Africa)
As a result of civil war, famine conditions killed an estimated 1 million people and left another 3.5 million suffering from extreme malnutrition.

    1970
    East Pakistan (Bangladesh)
The total death count ranged between 300,000 and 500,000 people after this cyclone, the worst natural disaster of this century. Severe winds and high waves destroyed a 3,000-square-mile area.

    1975-79
The Cambodian genocide, in which at least 1.7 million people lost their lives, stands as one of the worst human tragedies of the modern era. In Cambodia, as in Nazi Germany, Yugoslavia, and Rwanda, extremist politics conspired with a diabolic disregard for human life to produce repression, misery, and murder on a massive scale. The Cambodian genocide is unique, though, in that for many years it remained largely undocumented, and is only now being investigated for the purposes of bringing its perpetrators to justice.

    The Anfal Campaign
    (Iraqi Kurdistan), 1988
According to HRW/ME, "at least fifty thousand rural Kurds ... died in Anfal alone, and very possibly the real figure was twice that number ... All told, the total number of Kurds killed over the decade since the Barzani men were taken from their homes is well into six figures." "On the basis of extensive interviews in Kurdistan and perusal of extant Iraqi documents, Shoresh Resoul, a meticulous Kurdish researcher ... conservatively estimated that 'between 60,000 and 110,000 died during [al-]Majid's Kurdish mandate," i.e., beginning shortly before Anfal and ending shortly afterwards. (Randal, After Such Knowledge ..., p. 214.) Other Kurdish estimates are even higher.

..... these Kurds were systematically put to death in large numbers by order of the central Iraqi government in Baghdad days or weeks after being rounded up in villages marked for destruction or while fleeing army assaults in "prohibited areas."
... Documentary materials captured from the Iraqi intelligence agencies demonstrate with great clarity that the mass killings, disappearances, and forced relocations associated with Anfal and the other anti-Kurdish campaigns of 1987-89 were planned in a coherent fashion.

January 14, San Salvador, El Salvador: A major earthquake unleashed a landslide. 346 dead, 2,000 missing. Three streets and at least 300 houses simply disappeared when the hillside collapsed, leaving behind a lifeless moonscape a mile long and 1,000 feet wide.
It was hard to know which was more horrifying, the number of people buried by the landslide, or the very real possibility that some of them were still alive under the rubble, waiting for help that may never come.
Rescue workers reported hearing the groans from underground in some locations along the landslide area as late as Sunday morning. The police fielded calls from people buried in their homes.
"The people would say, 'Oh my God, help me, I'm buried under the dirt, my house is at such and such an address,'" said a cab driver who helped rescue efforts in Las Colinas. "But we can't help them, everything's gone, there's no way to know where that address used to be."
(Too bad God wasn't taking any calls. Were these people in the wrong church? Did they have some kind of "sin" that was separating them from God? Were they not paying all their tithes and giving generous offerings? Did they lack the faith that God would rescue them? Apparently they did not have enough time to work out these problems that God had with them. Editor)
Only three people had been pulled from Las Colinas alive by Sunday afternoon 1/14/01.

At least 12,000 bodies have been recovered from the rubble of India's devastating earthquake and the death toll is estimated to be 25,000, a top official of Gujarat state said Wednesday.
The 25,000 estimate is based on the number of bodies recovered, those reported missing, the estimated number still lying under debris and reports gathered by government agencies, said Haren Pandya, home minister of Gujarat.

    2/4/01
So far, 14,241 bodies have been recovered, Gujarat officials said Thursday, estimating the final toll would reach 35,000. About 600,000 people were left homeless. Rescue workers concede there are likely still a few people trapped alive under the ruined buildings that would now be destroyed by human hand but say they have exhausted their resources.
    9/11/01
Terrorist attack on the Word Trade Center, New York City and the Pentagon in Washington DC. Deaths in the thousands.
Total, as of 1/1/20002: 2824 deaths.

After 9/11 an incredible wave of god belief swept the USA. People couldn't deal with the fact that their god had obviously completely deserted them in this instance and felt they had to turn to him with even more of their belief; so church attendance increased dramatically. This in the face of undeniable evidence that God hadn't blessed America.

They rationalized all the deaths by saying that the dead were now "with god." Or they say that god could not intervene and hold up those towers for just a few minutes more to save those people that were still alive because then He would be taking away our "free will."

But then, they say that God went around to the now multiple tens of thousands relatives of the now dead people and "comforted" them. At least that is what the many prayers were for.

I'm sorry but, comforting them changes what would have been. That is taking away "free will."

It would have been easier and better to just delay the falling of the towers a few minutes or hours and let the people escape alive.

276 dead, 20 missing in fire in Lima Shopping District Fire
According to witnesses, the fire began late Saturday in a store that was illegally selling homemade fireworks for New Year's celebrations, after vendors tested some of the wares.

It quickly spread through a four-block area of historic downtown Lima known as Mesa Redonda that was packed with fireworks vendors and customers. The blaze destroyed tall buildings, several old homes and scores of automobiles
A live television broadcast showed scorched bodies, including those of teenagers and children, piled on top of each other.
(Were all these people that died, not praying? Did they have some kind of sin that was separating them from god? Was god watching the wrong channel?)

    "Honor" Killings of Women

"Honour" killings of women can be defined as acts of murder in which "a woman is killed for her actual or perceived immoral behavior." (Yasmeen Hassan, "The Fate of Pakistani Women," International Herald Tribune, May 25, 1999.) Such "immoral behavior" may take the form of marital infidelity, refusing to submit to an arranged marriage, demanding a divorce, flirting with or receiving phone calls from men, failing to serve a meal on time, or -- grotesquely -- "allowing herself" to be raped. In the Turkish province of Sanliurfa, one young woman's "throat was slit in the town square because a love ballad was dedicated to her over the radio." (Pelin Turgut, "'Honour' Killings Still Plague Turkish Province," The Toronto Star, May 14, 1998.)

    Democide:

To find out how many people have been murdered by their own rulers throughout all recorded human history, check out political science professor Rudolph Rummel's website at http://www.freedomsnest.com/rumrud.html There has been so much killing of people by their own leaders, all of whom God set up over them, according to that "good book," that Professor Rummel had to coin a new word for it: democide. This means the deliberate murder of people by their own government.

you a lump of coal only on the "Loving God" scale.

    God Diagnosed with Bi-Polar Disorder.

    Draw your own conclusions
    from the following information:

If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following:

    There would be:
    57 Asians
    21 Europeans
14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south
    8 Africans
    52 would be female
    48 would be male
    70 would be non-white
    30 would be white
    70 would be non-Christian
    30 would be Christian
    89 would be heterosexual
    11 would be homosexual
6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth and all 6 would be from the United States.
80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read
    50 would suffer from malnutrition
1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth
1 (yes, only 1) would have a college education
    1 would own a computer

The following is also something to ponder...

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness...you are more fortunate than the million who will not survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation ...you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.

If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep... you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace... you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.

If your parents are still alive and still married... you are very rare, even in the United States and Canada.
